First, go over to arduino.cc and click on the download option for your device. There is support for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.

Click on Just Download or Contribute & Download if you'd like to make a contribution before downloading the software.

Once the download has been complete, run the file. On Mac, we have got a downloaded zip folder. Double-clicking on it results in an Arduino.exe file found in the Downloads folder. We now have the Arduino software installed on our machine. The steps may be different on your operating system but simply follow along with their step-by-step installation instructions provided.

On Mac, navigate to Arduino > Preferences or for Windows : File > Preferences

In the dialog box which will pop up, enter the following URL in the “Additional Boards Manager URLs” field: https://github.com/earlephilhower/arduino-pico/releases/download/global/package_rp2040_index.json

Then click the OK button to close the dialog.

Now, navigate to Tools>Boards>Board Manager in the IDE. Type “pico” in the search box and click on the Install button.
